About us

The Legendary Karthäuserhof Estate

The Karthäuserhof estate is a place of legend – a fairy-tale setting perched above the sublime Ruwer Valley. As the eighth oldest winegrowing estate in the world*, our roots run deep. Officially founded as a monastery in 1335, this “Farm of the Carthusians” was gifted to the Carthusian monks by Prince-Elector Balduin of Luxembourg. Astonishingly, since 1811, our family has lovingly stewarded this historic estate across seven generations.

The Location: A Deep Connection to Our Vineyards

What makes this extraordinary site so unique is the interplay of countless natural elements – climate, topography, and soil – all converging to create an exceptional terroir. The stark contrast between warm days and cool nights plays a vital role in shaping the distinct aromas of Karthäuserhof wines.

Our vineyards rest on ancient soils along the Ruwer, characterized by reddish and bluish slate from the Devonian period, dating back nearly 400 million years. These well-draining, mineral-rich soils provide the ideal conditions for our vines – lean, light, and free from excessive water retention, allowing the grapes to develop purity, tension, and depth.

The Wines We Craft

Every bottle we produce is a tribute to our terroir and heritage. The cool microclimate of the Ruwer, the exceptional positioning of our vineyards, and extended lees aging before bottling define our signature style – elegant, precise, and complex.

Each vintage shapes our portfolio, from refreshing and approachable entry-level wines to those of GG (Grosses Gewächs) quality. A recent jewel in our collection is our range of traditional method sparkling wines, masterfully crafted by our technical director, Mathieu Kauffmann – former chef de cave at Bollinger.

The wines we craft

Karthäuserhofberg Riesling GG

The grapes for our VDP.Grosses Gewächs come from our
exclusive monopole Grand Cru site Karthäuserhofberg. It
faces south by southwest and covers almost 20 hectares with
a slope of up to 55%. The unique microclimate and because
of the high iron concentration pink-copper-colored Devonian
slate, make it the perfect place for the production of high
quality Rieslings.

Schieferkristall Riesling trocken

The grapes come mainly from our monopole vineyard site
Karthäuserhofberg, but also from Mertesdorf
and Waldrach (all in the Ruwer valley) in order to bring
together the entire spectrum of the different terroirs of
Karthäuserhof into our estate wine

Eitelsbacher Riesling Alte Reben

The grapes are grown in the village of Eitelsbach
(Ruwer valley) with an unique microclimate and the
distinctive Devonian slate in the soil. They originate
from the older plots of Karthäuserhofberg with
forty years old wines.

Karthäuserhof BRUT

Expertly crafted by our Technical Director, Mathieu Kauffmann (former Chef de Cave at Bollinger), this exceptional blend of Riesling and Pinot Blanc undergoes 36 months of lees ageing to achieve remarkable depth and complexity.

Sourced from our vineyards in the Ruwer Valley, it beautifully reflects the cool microclimate and the unique terroir of our region, delivering a sparkling expression of elegance and character.

Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Kabinett

The grapes for our classic Prädikat wines come exclusively from our monopole vineyard, Karthäuserhofberg, with its optimal south-southwest exposure and slopes of up to 55%. The unique microclimate and pink-copper Devonian slate soil create ideal conditions for exceptional Rieslings.

Hand-harvested grapes are gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel under controlled conditions. The wine then matures on the full lees for six to eight months, as time and patience are key.

A spicy, wild-yeast aroma leads, followed by juicy notes of peach, grapefruit, and white currant, with the slate’s minerality shining through. On the palate, it’s vibrant and dense, with well-integrated sweetness balanced by lively acidity—a Kabinett that will reveal new facets over the next two decades.

Exclusively from our monopole vineyard, Karthäuserhofberg, with south-southwest exposure and slopes up to 55% incline. The unique microclimate and pink-copper Devonian slate soil shape this outstanding Riesling.

Hand-harvested, gently pressed, fermented in stainless steel, and aged 6–8 months on full lees.

On the palate: Spicy, wild, juicy fruit with notes of wet stone, fresh acidity, and a long, elegant finish. Excellent aging potential.

BRUNO Riesling DRY

Bruno of Cologne, founder of the Carthusian Order, left a lasting legacy. The monks of the former monastery, founded in 1335, inscribed his name in large metal letters on its façade—a symbol that still inspires us today in facing our daily challenges: steep slopes, slate soils, and meticulous handcraft.

Our grapes thrive on the steep slopes of the Mosel and Ruwer, rooted in sparse slate soils with optimal inclines.

To preserve the delicate aromas nurtured by the vines, we harvest all grapes by hand, apply gentle pressing, and practice minimal intervention in the cellar. What we invest, however, is something essential: time. Patience and time are the key ingredients in viticulture, pressing, fermentation, and aging. We avoid fining, allow natural sedimentation, and add only a touch of sulfur.

Riesling. Slate. Mosel.
These three words capture the essence of what awaits both nose and palate. Classic notes of cool, bright citrus fruit intertwined with spicy slate minerality, elegantly structured yet vibrant with an irresistible drinkability. A joyful wine—perfect on its own or paired with food, always delivering pure pleasure and delight.

The grapes for this wine grow in an old parcel of the Karthäuserhofberg, rooted in sparse, slate-rich soils with a southwest exposure—ideal conditions for cultivating exceptional Riesling.

An intense bouquet of pear, white peach, and honeydew melon, complemented by hints of hazelnut and subtle roasted aromas. On the palate, it’s dense and structured, bursting with juiciness and power, yet balanced by a seductive creaminess that makes the mild acidity feel more like refreshing brightness.
